Rane (Madras) Ltd, the flagship of the Madras-based Rane Group, was incorporated in 1936 to carry out trading in automobiles and automobile components. RML began production of tie rod ends in 1962 in technical collaboration with TRW Ehrenreich GmbH & Cokg of Germany. The company began producing steering linkages and steering gears in 1973. Rane (Madras) manufactures Quintol Hazell-Rane tie rod ends, Ehrenreich steering linkages, Don-Flex clutch discs and steering gears. It commissioned a second plant at Mysore in 1984. In 1987, RML set up Rane Power Steering Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary, in technical collaboration with TRW Inc of US, to manufacture power steering systems used in commercial vehicles and luxury cars. TRW increased its stake in RPSL to 51% in FY91. RML has a market share of about 40% in the total tie-rod ends market and is the largest supplier to the jeep, tractor and car segments. Its market share in steering gears is at about 27%. TRW Rane Occupant Restraints Ltd, manufacturing seat belts, commenced commercial operations in FY98. Kold Form Tech (I) Ltd, a JV for cold forged components, has started commercial production from the Medavakkam (near Chennai) unit during FY98. The Rane group has promoted, with overseas collaborators, three auto-component joint ventures (JV) namely Rane TRW Steering Systems Ltd (RTSSL), Rane Nastech Ltd (RNL) and TRW Rane Occupant Restraints Ltd (TROR). The Rane group`s holding in these JVs are presently held by RBLL and a group company Rane (Madras) Ltd (RML.
Rane (Madras) has restructured its investment in joint venture companies. The plan included the acquisition of Glendale Investments (GIL) -- a subsidiary of Rane Brake Linings (RBLL). Also acquisition from RBLL equity shares in Rane TRW Steering Systems (RTSSL), Rane Nastech and TRW Rane Occupant Restraints. It also entails transfer of its acquisition from shares from RBLL, RTSSL, Rane Nastech and TRW Rane Occupant Restraints to GIL.
