Dr. Surinder Kapur promoted Sona Steering in 1984. The company entered into a technical collaboration with Koyo Steering in June 1985 to manufacture steering systems in India. Koyo happened to be the second largest steering systems manufacturer in the world and a sole supplier to Suzuki Corporation, Japan. SKSS entered into a JV with Maruti Udyog in 1986 under which the latter took a 10% stake in the equity share capital of SKSS. Commercial production started in October 1987 with an initial production capacity of 0.125mn steering gears per annum. Subsequently, facilities for axle shafts, propeller shafts and sector shafts were also built. Koyo entered into an MOU with SKSS for sourcing steering components in 1992 and picked up 8% stake in the company. Sona Koyo Steering Systems Limited (SKSSL) is a technical and financial joint venture company of Koyo Seiko Company, Japan, the global technology leader in Steering Systems. With a Market share of 50%, the company is the largest manufacturer of steering gears in India and is the leading supplier of : Hydraulic Power Steering Systems, Manual Rack & Pinion Steering Systems. Collapsible, Tilt and Rigid Steering Columns for Passenger Vans and MUVs. The company's product range also extends to Rear Axle Assemblies and Propeller Shafts. Named as a Global Growth Company in 1997 by the World Economic Forum, the company is now well positioned to lead the Indian Automotive Component Industry to Global Standards in the coming millennium. They are surging ahead in they journey of Total Quality Management (TQM).
