McDowell & Company Ltd is the flagship of the Vijay Mallya-promoted United Breweries Group. The UB group is the seventh largest spirit manufacturer in the world with annual sales of over 25million cases. UB has a 42.5% equity stake in McDowell. The company's brands are manufactured in 29 distilleries spread all over the country. Out of these 15 are owned or managed by the UB Group. The rest are a contract manufacturer. The company also undertakes manufacture of the largest non-scotch whisky brand of the world Bagpipers Whisky for sister concern Herbertsons. The company owns 42 brands. The company sold 19mn cases of liquor in FY00. The parent group is implementing a major restructuring programme under which the spirits business of the group would be consolidated. The parent group has amalgamated 6 group entities, Serampore Distillery and Chemicals Limited, Vitari Distilleries Limited, Udaipur Distillery company Limited, Mysore Wine products Limited, McDowell Properties Limited and McDowell Spirits Limited into McDowell and Company Limited to from McDowell Limited. The company was manufacturer Brandy. Whisky, Rum, Gin, Vodka. In terms of consumption, the industry is largely skewed towards whisky segment, which accounts for mare than 60% of the entire market. The industry is dominated by Indian players like McDowell, Shaw Wallace, Radico Khaitan, Jagatjit Industries, Mohan Meakins etc. Foreign players too have their presence in the country through their tie-ups with some Indian partners. Some of the major international players present in the country are UDV with brands Gilbey Green Label, Johny Walker Red label, Johny Walker Black label, Smirnoff Vodka etc, Bacardi Martini with brands Bacardi Reserva, Bacardi Carta Blanca, Seagram with Royal Stag, Pernord Group with Tilsbury and Sandiego brands, etc.
