Bihar Caustic and Chemicals Ltd (BCCL), was originally a joint venture between the Aditya Birla Group and Bihar State Industrial Development Corporation, set up with the prime objective to cater to the caustic requirements of Hindalco. It was commissioned in 1984 with an initial caustic soda capacity of 100 tpd. The customer driven market with fierce competition and exorbitantly high electricity tariff were the factors that necessitated a review of strategy for this power intensive product. A 30 mw captive power plant was commissioned in January 2001, contributing to the overall growth of the Company. Consequent to a Rights Issue for financing the power project, Hindalco's share holding rose to 54.57 per cent in BCCL making it a full subsidiary of Hindalco. After the power plant initiative, it was the de-bottlenecking of the caustic plant through augmentation of the caustic and chlorine capacity during 2003-04 that helped the Company boost its profitability.
