Incorporated in 1982, Indo Matsushita Carbon Company is promoted by Shri P. Obul Reddy and Shri
S.R. Jiwrajka in technical and financial collaboration with Matsushita Electrical Industries Ltd,
Japan. The company is engaged in carbon rods used in dry cell.the plants are located in Tada
(Nellore, Andhra Pradesh). The company makes carbon rods used in dry-cell. IMCC supplies carbon
rods to almost all major battery producers such as Indo National, Lakhanpal National and Eveready
Industries. Thus, the company`s performance is entirely dependant on dry cell production. Apart from the presence in the domestic market, IMCC has actively tapped foreign markets. The
company is a net foreign exchange earner, with exports accounting for about 24 per cent of the
turnover for the year ended March 2000. The major raw materials are low ash content coal coke,
coal tar pitch, wax, Indian natural graphite and amorphous. Prices of key inputs such as furnace
oil and carbon black have a direct bearing on the company`s fortunes. Around one third of the
material consumption is imported. The company also faces threat from cheap imports, especially
from China. The Government`s recommendation of imposing anti-dumping duty on batteries may
provide some relief to battery producers.
