Incorporated in 1975 as Maharashtra Glass & Agro Limited (MGAL), Sekurit Saint-Gobain India Ltd. manufactures flat and curved toughened glasses for automobile and other applications. In 1992 the company started its oil division, i.e., solvent extraction plant at Ujhani, Uttar Pradesh costing RS 44 million. In FY94, MGAL entered into an agreement with Saint Gobain Vitrage S.A. of France, the world's leading glass makers for the manufacture of laminated safety glass windscreen for automobiles. In FY98, Sekurit Saint-Gobain increased its shareholding from 26% to 51% and assumed management of the company. Subsequently the name of the company was changed to Sekurit Saint-Gobain India Ltd. During FY99, Sekurit's holding was increased to 75.11% of the equity capital. The company has been incurring losses for the past few years. Though the turnover increased by 15.7% RS 290.9 million in FY99, the company could not break even and incurred a loss of RS 67.53 million.
Future Plans: The company is currently working on a horizontal bending furnace project. The management has planned a restructuring programme, which includes the improving the utilisation of plants, completing the sidelite project and improving the cost position through better yields.
