Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces comprises 56 hotels in 37 locations across India with an additional 13 international hotels in the Maldives, Mauritius, UK, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Africa and the Middle East. Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces' first hotel, the Taj Mahal Palace and Tower, Mumbai, was started by the Group founder, Jamsetji N Tata, in December 1903. Closely linked to the city's history, the Taj's flagship hotel is an architectural landmark, as are several Taj hotels across India.
Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces is grouped into Luxury, Leisure and Business categories to provide consistency across the different hotels in the same brand and standardise products and services. Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces also operates Taj Air, a luxury private jet operation with two state-of-the-art Falcon 2000 aircraft, and Taj Yachts, two 3-bedroom luxury yachts which can be used by guests in Mumbai and at Kochi, in Kerala. Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces also operates Taj SATS Air Catering, the largest airline catering service in South Asia, as a joint venture with Singapore Airport Terminal Services, a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines.
Taj GVK Hotels & Resorts Ltd, a joint venture of the GVK group and Indian Hotels Company Ltd, posted a gross operating profit of Rs 9.26 crore and a net profit of Rs 4.53 crore for 2000-2001. The company, which owns three five-star deluxe hotels in Hyderabad, has recommended a tax-free dividend of 10 per cent to the general body, which is due to meet on September 21.
