Surat Electricity Company Ltd (SECL) was incorporated as a public limited company in 1920 for the acquisition and working of the Surat City Municipality & District Local Board Electric License, 1918. The company is engaged in distributing electricity to the public in Surat & its suburbs by way of purchasing the same from Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) originally under licence and now under a sanction granted under the Indian Electricity Act, 1910. In 1996, the Torrent group acquired a controlling stake in the company. Currently, SECL has an installed capacity of approximately 350 MVA consisting of 8 receiving stations and 941 substations. The company buys on an average 5.59 mn units a day and supplies it to over 345,000 consumers through underground and overhead distribution systems. SECL is also engaged in contract activities involving installation of electrical machinery and sale of electrical goods. The company has also ventured into the business of providing computer services and other electronically controlled devices, equipment and facilities and other related activities. Future Plans: The company has planned to spend almost Rs 600 mn towards augmenting the distribution network and creating extra facilities for receiving additional power from GEB. The Company also plans to set up its own generation capacity within 3 years. Various activities like fuel linkage, site selection, and dialogues with various government agencies are in progress.
