The flagship of the Vardhman Group, Vardhman Spinning & General Mills (VSGM) was incorporated in 1965 and started operations with a 12,000-spindle unit. It has set up several units over the years: a 35,000-tpa mini steel plant in 1972, Mahavir Spinning in 1975 and Auro Spinning in 1991. In 1986, it ventured into exports through an arrangement with Marubeni Corp, Japan. The steel division was sold off to group company Mahavir Spinning in March 1995. VSGM commissioned a 100 per cent EOU with 25000-spindle capacity in Himachal Pradesh near its existing unit in March 1998. It also added 36 looms to its weaving units in December 1997. VSGM manufactures cotton yarn, woven fabrics of cotton, and yarn of synthetic staple fibre. It has a strong presence in the cotton hosiery, yarn business. Vardhman is the largest producer of dyed yarns in India today. The main strength of the company remains in spinning. Its spinning units are mainly located in H.P. and Punjab. At present, the company has one spinning unit and dye house at Ludhiana (Punjab), two spinning units (including a 100 per cent EOU), a weaving unit, a dye house and a process house all at Baddi (HP). During the year 2001-2002, yarn production increased by 6.10 per cent while production of grey fabric increased by 16.53 per cent. However, sale of yarn during the period 2001-2002 decreased to 5.25 per cent, while sale of grey fabric increased to 30.81 per cent. Future Plans: The company has planned to modernise its Spinning unit at Ludhiana with a cost of Rs 13.50 crore, which will upgrade the technology of the unit. With a view to cater to market demand at high quality yarn, the company plans to add 4032 spindles with State of Art Spinning Machines, `COM-4` in (100% EOU) at Baddi.
